About me

Hi, my name is Amanda Thomsen.  I am a Dane who grew up in Spain, so I always say – my heart is Spanish ;) .. I am a profesional and creative photographer, and lately  my main focus have been on weddings, portraits and lifestyle photography.   I love to observe, and I am very attracted by people who looks different or sticks out of the crowd.  I admire people who dare to be themselves and do things their own way and I will try to get this through my images.

In the more profesional aspect of my photography carrier, I took a BA(hons) degree in Photography, at Kent Institute of Art and Design, England, year 2002.   I have been an independent photographer ever since.  Coming back from University in the UK,  I shared a darkroom/studio with some wonderful photographer artists in Copenhagen .. We did a few exhibitions together, and it was great fun! But jobs where not many and darkroom times started slowly to die out.  A few years later I rented a little room in a cellar, that I converted into a small Fotostudio .. This was my first real step toward photographing people and actually getting money from it.  I was completely inspired by the photographer Malick Sidibe, who had a Photo Studio in Bamako, Mali.  I wanted a studio like him ;) so I bought some black and white checked floor and lots of funny props and fabrics and converted the celler into a very colorful studio.  The girl I was sharing the studio with was Anja, the clothes designer of Ziestha clothing .. she learned me lots of things about running a business.  After a few years there, I got an offer to rent a bigger place situated in a very nice area in central Copenhagen .. I took it! Here I continued with the Photo Studio, I got my own sign and I felt at home the minute I moved in.

Last year (2011) I started to do more and more jobs on location and the studio felt a bit empty and I needed a change!!  I contacted photographer Lina Ahnoff, and after an hour or so I had convinced her to move in ;) This was not my first intention, but I’m happy I did!!  Now we share the studio and the studio has changed.  It is no longer a photo studio but more a place where we work, do meetings and get inspired and most jobs are done on location.

In between all this, I have also done some video and photo documentation for (AfNOG) The African Network Operators’ Group and (NSRC) The National Science Resources Center.   Photo workshop with “ROUTELESS?” at DFUNK (a nationwide organization for young people who work for refugees in Denmark and internationally).  I have also done video installation for Baboonbase, Event Transportable and Erindringsfabrikken. Gosh, and many other small things ;)
